General Info
Roland Deschain is a character in Stephen King's The Dark Tower series. He's very pragmatic, very no-nonsense, and he believes deeply in the importance and power of love, so those are concepts I like to play with in PSLs and whatever else. His canon allows for multiple realities which contain different versions of the same characters and it allows for travel between those realities, so I'd be happy to play either an AU Roland or a canon Roland who has somehow just ended up in the canon of some other show or book or whatever. I'm up for any genre except one-on-one fight threads.

Abilities
Learned abilities include absolutely ridiculous amounts of hand/eye coordination, along with some ridiculously quick reaction time to go with it. Special Ops Boyscout is the theme of the day here.

He has what he calls a learned ability to go long amounts of time on little to no water, and a natural psychic ability that he was trained to use. He can hypnotize people (although he could have issues if they have a strong will and don't want to cooperate) in a way that looks very like stage magician hypnosis - he runs some shiny object (usually a bullet) over the backs of his fingers and uses that as a focus for his abilities to put a person under, and from there he can get them to tell him their memories, recover certain memories, block memories out, that sort of thing. When he takes mescaline (or, presumably, any hallucinogenic drug) his abilities allow him to communicate with and fight the minds of certain creatures directly, although it isn't clear what else those chemically-assisted abilities could do with the mind of someone/something that wasn't telepathic itself.

Appearance

Edited post-movie to add: In the movie he looks like Idris Elba. This would be great except for how thinking about the Dark Tower movie only makes me sad and none of the images of Elba's Roland that I can find have him making any expression at all. I made the Elba icons, but decided they were pretty boring to look at compared to the icons I already had. So, if you're here wondering why this Roland doesn't look like the one in the Dark Tower movie, I answer you: What Dark Tower movie?

Okay. Back to the original description.

To quote a friend: He looks like the weight of the world is slowly pulling him closer to hell.

He looks older than he is - as I've figured his timeline, anyway. In any case he's somewhere in middle age and looks like he's spent half that time baking in the sun. He wears thick, worn jeans, a shirt laced up with rawhide cord, old well-used cowboy boots, a neckerchief, and a hat. He carries a bag, the rawhide lacing up its sides and at its mouth obviously broken and carefully knotted back up in many places. He might carry a bedroll and at least one canteen, and unless otherwise mentioned he will definitely be wearing his guns. They're long and heavy six-guns, blue-grey metal with fine grained sandalwood handles, and are obviously well cared for. He rarely lets anyone look closely at them but if he does they'll see this fancy little wingding etched near the end of each muzzle. If I'm playing him from during or after the second book he'll only be wearing a gun and holster on his left side, while the right leg of his jeans have a pale strip rubbed into the denim where he used to tie down that holster, and his right index and middle fingers will be gone with ragged, puckered scars in their place. Also he doesn't get the opportunity to wash as often or as thoroughly as most characters might be used to so he won't exactly smell like he just stepped out of a bubble bath, if smell is a factor in your character's general first impression.

Smut
While I'm interested in learning to play sex stuff I'm not usually into smut for its own sake and am typically only going to be up for gen. If I do, though, I play Roland as asexual, into sex for a feeling of emotional intimacy rather than for any physical attraction to the other person, and he'll be likely to mostly follow along with whatever the other person seems to want. I'm not very knowledgeable about kink but as far as I'm aware my only hard no is pedophilia and my only maybe-but-probably-no is noncon, so if you're ok with that and you're up for giving me constructive feedback on how to write smut while we thread I'll probably be up for it.

Places like this can be dangerous, yes. The mysterious men in dark hoods who may or may not know real magic, may or may not know real medicine, may or may not be out to slit your throat and steal your purse if you don't look like a fair enough customer.

There usually aren't bullets.

There are always bullets, eventually. This is a fact of the gunslinger's life. The fact that the men shooting them can only be seen through the thick smoke that was meant to give this little tent an air of magic and mystery is troublesome. Not insurmountable.

The gunslinger's thin fingers slip the packet of mescaline into his purse, because that much is important. Then he squints through the smoke, waiting for another shot so he can gauge where it's coming from. Chances are that shot may hit something dangerous, or maybe only something flammable. Roland hadn't yet decided whether the owner of this tent was what he claimed to be before the shooting started. Doesn't matter. He's got what he came for. Now to shoot his way out with it, and try not to run afoul of any ruined potions or spells in doing it.

It can't be a tent in the middle of nowhere. That would be simpler, and quite frankly the newly dubbed heir of the Eld would prefer it. But he knows the kind of message that would send. The surroundings for this have to be valuable, something it doesn't look like it's expected to be torn down with gunfire at any moment. But neither does he care to look too trusting so when he steps into the cold, ornate building it's with a small and loyal group of soldiers.

This building isn't on his own land, and it feels strange to be stepping on it without going fast and keeping himself hidden, but he's here. Somehow, bringing milk and honey as the refreshments felt unwise. He brought hard cheese instead, and bread. A soldier's lunch. Now it only remains to meet this man, the leader he knows little about and has never met, and try to see that this doesn't break into a war. He does not particularly expect to be successful. This is probably not a good sign.

That concert had been something, at least some sort of action to take while others risked their lives. Even that brief, unplanned fire and subsequent destruction had been satisfying in its way, almost let Roland fall into that cold, dry place his mind and spirit always falls into once the killing starts. Almost. But once it ended-

Well. There's always his knitting.

He doesn't dare train any more often than usual, doesn't dare do anything at all too out of the ordinary, so after a couple hours he forces himself to stand, stretch, leave the equipment and weapons of sublevel 02 behind. Sweat drips down his back as he climbs the steps to the fourth floor, and once he reaches it he hesitates. Visiting someone wouldn't seem so strange. Not his new-old friend on the seventh floor, nor his lover on the twelfth. But the sweat is beginning to dry, and washing it off will take up some little time. For now, that'll be enough.

He doesn't wait to get out of the relative public space of the common room before he starts reaching over his shoulder for the straps to unhook it. "Damned thing," he mutters, craning to try and get a look, because of course even clothes for training have to be a show and the outfit links up in a series of diagonal lines just over the parts of his back that are a genuine bitch to get to. He huffs, maybe a little more frustrated than this situation deserves, and starts wiggling and tugging at the thick, black and purple pain in his ass in vague hopes that it'll decide on its own to tear or start to slip off somewhere. Roland makes his way across the room mildly aware of his surroundings, but only in the dim, nonspecific way that ignores any presence that isn't outright preparing to attack. It's possible he could walk right up to someone and barely even notice. Or care. Roland has more important problems at the moment, clearly.

This is not Asgard. Roland knows that much, and it is almost all he needs to know. The worlds are saved, his friends are gone, and he is - it doesn't matter. He is focusing on what he can, which is that these buildings look nothing like the ones he's spent the last maybe-year making his way around. They're a different color, different build. He has no idea where this street goes.

It's empty movement, maybe, taking no one and leading them nowhere, but the freedom of being able to wander again hasn't worn off yet. He isn't sure what is going to happen once it does.

Although, if he doesn't wake up a little soon that freedom may not last. Roland realizes he hasn't been noticing the way others walking near are looking at him, the way they seem to lean away. It takes him a moment to think that might have to do with their odd clothing style. It takes him another to think it might have to do with the fact that no one else seems to be wearing a weapon.

This latter is an observation he does not make on his own, and not right away. "Hey!" a man's voice calls. "Get out of here with that!"

The voice is certainly addressing him. Roland blinks at it, stopping in a doorway with not a thought for the people in front and behind now waiting to get through. "I... um. Cry pardon. With what?"

What is your favorite thing about life in the Capitol?: Ridiculous as the question seems, the best way to lie is to keep as close to the truth as possible, and there is a truth here. "The bonds I've made," he says, and keeps his anger very close, hidden under something grateful and gentle. "I've seen people here I never would have otherwise. I won't forget that."

Which arena is your favorite so far?: Roland's eyebrows rise, and he thinks about it. The question shouldn't be surprising, but it's just so ridiculous. There's also, oddly, a true answer to this one, too. "My first. That abandoned town with the spiders and the dogs."

Do you have a message for the people of your District?: Beyond something too obvious, 'don't give up hope' or somesuch - he shakes his head and waits for the next question. The people suffering outside the Capitol already know all they need to.

Tell us about your token: "Oh." Roland turns it to see its symbol, as if he'd forgotten what it looked like. It isn't as if its meaning has ever been a secret, but the idea of explaining it to this man and his audience of greedy, spoiled fools is almost nauseating. "It's a symbol I used to use to sign letters, seal documents." He shrugs a shoulder. Only an ancient sigul used to symbolize the power of an entire civilization and all the values on which it once stood. Total snoozefest. Nothing to see here.

Who would you say is your biggest competition in the Arena?: Oh. He's supposed to want to win, isn't he? "To be honest, I haven't been keeping up as I should have. We've a few new tributes, plenty I've never met - I'm sure I'll find someone." He gives a faint smile, designed to look more than a little smug. As if he hasn't found his equal yet, and doesn't expect to.

Who is your closest friend here?: Like hell he's going to single Signless out here. But neither will he get away, he thinks, without naming somebody. There's a way out here, even though it hurts.

"I'm sure you and your readers remember Cuthbert." He speaks quietly, trying to mask only some of the pain here. A little ought to show or this won't work. "He was here quite a while before I arrived, and did a great many things. There's no one here like him."

Heard any juicy gossip lately?: "Afraid not." He knows the purpose here, knows what they really want is drama to feed their useless, flapping mouths, but there's no one-

Hm. That boy who'd refused to turn off his music that one night. What was his name? Roland leans forward, tilting his head and lowering his voice. "But - and you didn't hear this from me - it's a terrible pity about Jason Todd's new condition. Spend one night with the wrong sort of lady..." He grimaces and shifts in his seat, as if having sympathy pains in a certain delicate area. "Less said about it, the better."

Can you tell us about the most intense moment of a recent Arena?: "Dying," he says, dryly. "Perhaps not dying itself. The fall. The moment you know what's about to happen, and know that changing it is utterly out of your power." He looks evenly into Caesar's eyes, and knows how unlikely it is that the man will care at all about what death really is, about what these games are doing to them. Feels worth a try anyway. "But you wouldn't know, I suppose."

Anything else you'd like the sponsors to know?: "I'm still not interested in being sponsored for any wrinkle cream," he shakes his head, and tries to look pitying. "But maybe there's a sponsor out there who'll be able to help poor Mr. Todd."

It's hard to move quite as fast as he's used to - that's the sore muscles, probably, remnants of whatever Panem's scientists had started to do before he and Signless had cut things short. He gives as much attention to the soreness as he ever has - that is, none - and keeps moving through the forest. The government's machines aren't what they once were, surveillance not nearly as unshakable as it used to be, but it's better to be under the canopy of the leaves nonetheless. It'd felt better so that's where Roland had led them, stolen cartomobile long since abandoned even though there's a road fairly close by. Maybe it wouldn't have been left behind if Eddie or Susannah had been with them, or anyone used to using to such machines, but on this matter he and his traveling companion are agreed. They're better without. Freer.

He looks over toward said companion, squints and raises a hand to shade his eyes. What he'd like to do is gauge the other man's condition, but since he's obviously well enough to walk Roland isn't going to ask. "Ready to stop a while? Should be safe."

So I'm not sure of the proper way to do this so if there's something I need to mention here let me know.

I'm not that experienced in writing smut and won't usually seek it out, although threads that focus on Roland's very casual, sort of platonic interest in sex (he enjoys the intimacy more than the actual act) would be fun, as well as ones which explore his tendency to follow the other person's lead and just kind of roll with whatever. Occasionally he doesn't realize that having a distaste for a certain act means he can say no, so let me know if that's not something you're comfortable seeing come up.

Mostly I'll be into playing platonic stuff, and I love plotting stuff out so let me know if there's anything you particularly want to do!
